What's Included in a Standard House Cleaning Checklist

The complete standard house cleaning checklist, room by room — what a professional clean covers, what it doesn't, and how to use it.

If you've never hired a cleaning service, "standard house cleaning" can feel like a mystery. What's actually covered? What costs extra? This guide lays out a complete standard house cleaning checklist so you know exactly what to expect — and how it differs from a deep clean.

You can also use this as a DIY checklist if you're cleaning your own home and want to make sure nothing gets missed.

What "Standard" Means

A standard (or "maintenance") clean keeps an already-reasonably-clean home fresh. It focuses on the surfaces and tasks that need regular attention. It is not the same as a deep clean, which tackles built-up grime, hidden areas, and detail work on a periodic basis.

Think of it this way: standard cleaning is the every-week or every-two-week upkeep. Deep cleaning is the quarterly reset.

The Standard Checklist, Room by Room

Whole Home (Every Room)

  • Dust all reachable surfaces, shelves, and decor
  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures within reach
  • Wipe light switches, door handles, and frames
  • Remove cobwebs
  • Empty trash and replace liners
  • Vacuum carpets and rugs
  • Sweep and mop hard floors
  • General tidying

Kitchen

  • Wipe counters and backsplash
  • Scrub sink, polish faucet
  • Clean stovetop surface and grates
  • Wipe appliance exteriors
  • Clean inside the microwave
  • Spot-clean cabinet fronts
  • Sweep and mop floors

Bathrooms

  • Scrub and disinfect toilet, inside and out
  • Clean tub and shower surfaces
  • Wipe shower glass
  • Scrub sink and vanity
  • Polish mirror
  • Wipe fixtures
  • Sweep and mop floors

Bedrooms & Living Areas

  • Dust all surfaces and sills
  • Make beds (or change linens if left out)
  • Wipe mirrors and glass
  • Vacuum and/or mop floors
  • Organize visible clutter

What's Usually NOT in a Standard Clean

These tasks are typically part of a deep clean, not standard service. Knowing the line prevents surprises:

  • Inside the oven and refrigerator
  • Inside cabinets and drawers
  • Hand-scrubbing baseboards (standard = dusting them)
  • Washing blinds (standard = dusting them)
  • Interior windows and tracks
  • Grout scrubbing and sealing
  • Behind and under heavy appliances and furniture

If you want any of these, just ask. We can add them to a visit or schedule a periodic deep clean.

How to Use This Checklist

  • Hiring a cleaner? Compare their scope to this list so you're comparing apples to apples. A quote that skips restrooms or floors isn't really cheaper.
  • Cleaning yourself? Work top to bottom, one room at a time, and dust before you vacuum — especially in Yuma, where airborne dust resettles fast.
  • On a budget? Prioritize kitchen and bathrooms; they affect health and hygiene most.

A Yuma-Specific Note

Our desert dust and hard water mean a couple of checklist items deserve extra attention here: shower glass (mineral spotting) and any horizontal surface near vents or windows (dust). A consistent standard-clean schedule keeps both from getting ahead of you.
